With the evolution of technology and social media platforms, there are more ways for fans to not only interact with idols but also dig deeper into their private lives and thoughts.
Since idols have started opening their own personal Instagram accounts, it has been a miraculous way to connect but has led to numerous scandals. From shocking live streams and mystory posts to even controversial follower lists and post likes, see the most scandalous Instagram scandals involving Korean celebrities below.
Choo Young Woo
The rising star and beloved support character (who soon becomes a hero) in The Trauma Code: Heroes on Call Choo Young Woo immediately fell into hot water after a controversy surrounding his Instagram following surfaced. He followed anti-feminist and outwardly war-right civic radical activist rapper Jung Sang Soo. Choo Young Woo also liked and followed hyper-sexual and controversial AfreecaTV BJ KUBIN who is infamous for posting solely provocative content such as “Things I would put down my pants,” “What was unknowingly put in my panties while I slept?” etc. Choo Young Woo started cleaning his SNS following after becoming more famous and fans were disgusted.
Park Sung Hoon
A sad situation for many fans and the actor himself, Squid Game Season 2 and The Glory star Park Sung Hoon’s slip of the finger cost him his career. Park Sung Hoon mistakenly posted an uncensored pornographic picture of a Japanese version of Squid Games titled ‘Squirt Game,’ to his Instagram Stories, and although it was brief, the post was screen captured in a matter of seconds. The news went viral and fans questioned why he would have such lewd content in his phone and how he could have shared it to the public “by mistake.” Park soon after lost endorsement deals and was even removed from an upcoming drama that was set to release this year. Park broke down in tears when apologizing to the public for his mistake.
GFRIEND’s Sowon
RIIZE’s Seunghan
Popular boy group member Seunghan faced severe backlash from fans due to his past life and photos with his previous girlfriend being revealed. Photos of them dating and even sleeping together in a bed at a motel sparked controversy and fans were angered by Seunghan’s careless actions before his debut. After that, an anonymous person tipped fans off that Seunghan still engages and has private livestreams with his girlfriend and a photo was posted to a fan chatroom on KakaoTalk. However, fans were more concerned for the idol’s close friend group as the screenshot revealed only four people seemed to be present in the live stream, seemingly as friends, and one of them fabricated evidence and stories based on the private meeting.
Actor Kim Min Seok, Singer Kim Min Seok and Kim Sung Cheol
Probably one of the most shocking controversies to date, a group of Korean celebrities was caught engaging in an overtly sexual Instagram account, leaving comments and even participating in voting polls regarding female idols. The account with over 210K+ followers is known for footage manipulation and slowing down fan cams, highlighting upskirt shots, and body exposure of female idols which many deem as sexual harassment. Melomance’s Kim Min Seok addressed the controversy during a press conference for the musical ‘Werther’ stating “He didn’t know the controversy and sexual nature of the Instagram posts.”
The stars were interacting in a questionable online poll featuring popular K-pop idols, Kwon Eun Bi and Kang Hye Won. However, singer Kim Min Seok was allegedly participating in a Coupang Play contest and commented “Manchester is red… hmm…” from his official account and the original poster seemed to have cropped and fabricated the story around Kim Min Seok’s original post.
What do you think of these idol controversies? Did some of the idols suffer far too much for their actions? Do you think some of the idol’s public apologies were more so excuses to save their skin? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
