Korean A-lister Song Hye Kyo revealed the extensive preparation behind her grittiest role yet in the upcoming supernatural thriller Dark Nuns. The actress spoke candidly during a press interview on January 21st about her transformation into Sister Unia.

“When I first read the script and started filming, I noticed that while there was a backstory for Michaela, there wasn’t one for Unia. I wondered why she would go to such lengths to save this child—not family, not even a niece, and unlike ‘The Priests,’ they weren’t even from the same parish,” Song shared. “While I personally couldn’t imagine doing something like that, I realized Unia must have lived her entire life with such conviction. I approached the role thinking of her as someone with unwavering faith in humanity as a nun.”

The actress’s rugged portrayal has turned heads, particularly her mastery of profanity-laden dialogue. “Back when I did ‘My Brilliant Life,’ I was criticized for not being convincing enough when I said the swear words. That was in my early 30s,” she recalled with a laugh. “Cussing has specific intonations and accents, doesn’t it? I guess I’ve gotten better at cursing as I’ve lived life. The cursing scenes weren’t particularly challenging this time.”

However, mastering the art of smoking proved to be her biggest hurdle. “I have a principle of only having one vice in life, and mine is drinking,” Song revealed. “When I got the script, there were quite a few smoking scenes, especially my character’s introduction. I didn’t want to fake it—I heard smokers can tell right away. I was worried that if my first appearance looked fake, the entire character would feel inauthentic. So I started practicing six months before filming began with friends who smoke.”

“The beginning was tough, and my throat hurt since I’d never smoked before,” she added. “I’ve quit now.”

Dark Nuns, directed by Kwon Hyuk Jae, follows a group of individuals who undertake a forbidden ritual to save a young boy possessed by a powerful evil spirit. The film, conceived as a spin-off of The Priests, is set to hit theaters on January 24th.
