Netflix has announced its new Korean series Melo Movie will premiere globally on Valentine’s Day, February 14th, releasing a teaser poster and a trailer that showcase the chemistry between leads Choi Woo Shik and Park Bo Young.
The romantic drama follows young adults navigating their dreams and love lives while helping each other overcome past traumas. The series promises to deliver a heartfelt story about thirty-somethings pursuing their romantic ideals while dealing with personal struggles.
The project brings together Oh Choong Hwan, known for hits like Hotel Del Luna and Castaway Diva, with writer Lee Na Eun, who penned the acclaimed romance Our Beloved Summer. The series features a stellar ensemble including Choi Woo Shik, Park Bo Young, Lee Jun Young, and Jeon So Nee.
Choi Woo Shik portrays Ko Gyeom, a former bit player turned film critic and self-proclaimed cinephile, while Park Bo Young takes on the role of Kim Mu Bee, a film director who ironically once despised movies. The supporting cast includes Lee Jun Young as Hong Si Jun, a struggling composer who considers himself a genius, and Jeon So Nee as Son Ju Ah, his ex-girlfriend who returns as a screenplay writer.
The released poster captures a midnight moment between Ko Gyeom and Kim Mu Bee, accompanied by the intriguing tagline “Will it be a happy ending this time?” The trailer reveals their fateful first meeting, with Ko Gyeom playfully approaching Kim Mu Bee, saying, “I’m a huge movie fan. But your name’s literally ‘movie,'” only to be met with her curt response: “Can you not talk to me?”
Following their kiss that confirms their mutual feelings, Kim Mu Bee’s narration “Ko Gyeom disappeared just like that” adds another layer of mystery to their story. After suddenly appearing in her life and stirring her emotions, Ko Gyeom vanishes without a trace. Just as Kim Mu Bee struggles to forget him, he re-enters her life, this time with both of them on opposite sides of the industry—he as a critic, she as a director.
Director Oh Choong Hwan shared his initial hesitation about the genre: “As a director, romance is a dream genre, but it was still unfamiliar territory for me.” He continued, “However, reading the script changed my mind. A good story has the power to make you reflect on yourself, and this piece had that power from the moment I first encountered it. It perfectly expressed the excitement and wandering I felt in my youth.”
Writer Lee Na Eun revealed, “I wanted to portray the reality faced by young people dreaming of a movie-like life and their journey forward. Everyone has moments in life that feel like scenes from a movie, whether romantic or challenging, and I wanted to convey encouragement and comfort to myself and others who feel lost in those moments.”
