FT Island’s Choi Minhwan revealed that his divorce from ex-wife Yulhee, formerly of LABOUM, was due to her repeated absences from home.
In an interview with Dispatch on January 13, Choi shared that his marriage faced two major crises. The first was Yulhee’s frequent absences and unusual sleep habits. The second was her discovery in 2022 that he had visited certain entertainment establishments. He also mentioned a third issue: Yulhee’s excessive napping and repeated absences from home.
According to the report, Choi’s visits to these establishments were not initially part of the divorce negotiations. However, Yulhee publicly disclosed this information in October last year, claiming it contributed to their separation. She reportedly demanded 100 million won in alimony, 1 billion won in asset division, full custody of their children, and continued child support until they reach adulthood. Choi said he couldn’t meet these demands.
Choi argued that the primary cause of their divorce was Yulhee’s repeated absences. He shared text conversations from their disputes and claimed Yulhee sometimes slept 18–20 hours a day and left home over 20 times in five years.
Choi said he decided to file for divorce in August 2023, after Yulhee left home for a week. He explained that during this time, his family was mourning the deaths of his grandmother and their pet dog, but Yulhee was not there.
The couple finalized their divorce on December 8th, 2023, agreeing on alimony and asset division. However, Choi expressed frustration that Yulhee later changed her stance and brought up his visits to the establishments as a new reason for additional compensation.
Regarding claims of mistreatment by his parents-in-law, Choi denied them, saying, “My parents helped with laundry, cleaning, and even childcare after she gave birth. They never asked her to do chores.”
Choi also stressed that he was never neglectful in caring for their children and wanted to correct any false information.
Choi and Yulhee married in 2018 and had three children before announcing their divorce in 2023. In October of the same year, Yulhee exposed Choi’s visits to hostess clubs on her YouTube channel.
As a result, Choi temporarily paused his FT Island activities. He was later investigated for violating the Act on the Punishment of Prostitution and Coercion but was cleared of all charges.
When a fan asked about contraceptives, Choi clarified, “I’ve had a vasectomy for a long time, so I don’t need them.”
