Hwang Dong Hyuk, director of Netflix’s Squid Game, spoke about his decision to cast former BIGBANG member Choi Seung Hyun, also known as T.O.P, in Season 2, despite backlash surrounding his past marijuana charges.

At a press conference for Squid Game Season 2 held on August 1 at the Four Seasons Hotel in Seoul, Hwang addressed the criticisms surrounding the casting news. Notably, the event was held under a strict three-month embargo, and attending press were required to sign non-disclosure agreements before entry, pledging not to disclose any details discussed or preview footage shown during the session.

Reflecting on the criticism that emerged after casting T.O.P, Hwang shared, “Honestly, I didn’t anticipate the level of controversy this would cause.” He explained, “It’s been some time since that incident. He was sentenced, completed his probation, and served his due punishment. I’ve seen other celebrities return after similar situations, and I thought, ‘Maybe enough time has passed for him to start fresh.'”

Reflecting on the criticism, Hwang admitted, “I realized a lot more people had concerns than I expected. Maybe my perspective was too narrow.”

Despite his reservations, he noted that T.O.P’s commitment ultimately swayed his decision, explaining that he submitted numerous audition tapes, showcasing both his dedication and talent. “We tested him thoroughly,” Hwang said. “He sent me video performances and even auditioned in person to reassure me.”

While Hwang refrained from giving too many details about T.O.P’s role, he hinted that it’s a challenging character that requires courage. “I cast him because I felt he was the most suitable for the part,” he explained.

Director Hwang addressed viewers directly, saying, “Many may not understand why I insisted on casting him, but I had my reasons,” adding, “I hope people will understand, after watching the work, that this was not an easy decision.” He continued, “I believe viewers will see that it likely wasn’t easy for (T.O.P) himself to take on this role, either. Please wait until the series airs, and then judge for yourselves.”
