Napoli Matfia (Kwon Seong Joon), the winner of Netflix’s Culinary Class Wars, has issued a public apology for his behavior during the show’s finale, admitting that he acted “arrogant and lacked respect” towards his fellow contestants.

On October 8th, following the release of Culinary Class Wars‘ final episode, Napoli Matfia took to Instagram to address his remarks, saying, “Instead of sharing words of joy, I want to start by offering my sincere apologies and gratitude.” Napoli Matfia won the competition after defeating Edward Lee in the intense finale of the series, which pits star chefs (White Spoon) against underground chefs (Black Spoon). Napoli Matfia, a Black Spoon contestant, ultimately claimed victory.

The apology comes after backlash from viewers over comments Napoli Matfia made during the final episode. Ahead of the last competition, he commented, “I feel relieved seeing Triple Star and Edward Lee. I think I can easily beat them,” and added, “Whoever comes up, I’ll crush them.” While his comments were meant as a light-hearted jab in response to Triple Star’s bold statement, many viewers felt the remarks lacked respect for his competitors.

Reflecting on his behavior, Napoli Matfia explained, “Honestly, I knew both of them were strong competitors, and I put on an act to avoid feeling intimidated. Watching myself on the show, I realized how arrogant and lacking in humility I appeared, and I’ve learned a lot from this experience.” Addressing his controversial comment about “crushing” his rivals, he said, “It was meant as a motivational push to keep myself going, but I now see how it came off as overly cocky and reckless. I sincerely apologize for that.”

Napoli Matfia also expressed his admiration for fellow finalist Edward Lee, stating, “Though much of what I said about Chef Lee was edited out, I was blown away by his creativity and daring spirit during the competition. I even mentioned in an interview that I was in awe of his skills.” He added humbly, “In the final match, I felt like I used up all my luck to win. If we face each other again, I doubt I could beat him. If there’s ever a team competition, I’d gladly join his team.”
