Kim Nam Gil posed for the new pictorial of ELLE Korea.

In the interview that followed, Kim Nam Gil talked about winning the grand prize at the 2022 SBS Drama Awards with Through the Darkness.

“It wasn’t an easily accessible subject, so I approached the drama carefully,” Kim Nam Gil opened up. “Even if I gave up a little on ‘how popular it’ll be,’ I wanted to focus on telling the story. I wanted to make the show with a sense of mission and responsibility, and it seemed like the choice I made got recognized, so I was glad. I got the award thanks to the power of the show, so it was more meaningful.”

After Through the Darkness, he returned with the TVING original series Island, in which he played half-human half-monster Ban. As it turns out, Kim Nam Gil has been a fan of the original comics of the same name. “At first, I refused to take the role because I didn’t want to ruin the work I love so much with my own hands,” he shared. “But I changed my mind when someone told me, ‘Why do you think you’ll ruin it without even trying? Why don’t you make a great project with that love (you have for the work)?'”

Lastly, the actor expressed his personal wish as an actor. “I hope there will be more works that understand and make viewers understand of human nature rather than shows that focus only on being spicy, salty, and red,” Kim Nam Gil shared. “As an actor, I don’t want to embarrass the people who I get to know in my works. I hope each project motivates each person to pursue their dreams.”
