Lee Byung Hun’s Unexpected Past Included Paying Off His Father’s Debt by Performing at Nightclubs

The last episode of Entertainment Company Live took a look back at what Lee Byung Hun did to get out of his father’s debt before all the fame and attention.

On the December 3rd episode of the KBS 2TV’s show, the hosts came up with a chart with the theme of “stars who won their fight with debt.” Lee Byung Hun, who shot to stardom right after his debut and became a Hollywood star, ranked 7th on the chart.

According to the show, Lee’s father expanded his business into Vietnam. However, he passed away soon after his business bankrupt due to the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis, leaving a huge debt to his son.

Byung Hun once shared in an entertainment show, “I became a living character and did whatever it took to pay off the debt. I filmed an ad for a study book wearing a Robocop costume. I even performed at nightclub events from Gwangju to Busan.”

The actor owed more than 1 billion won in debt at the time. He was able to pay off his debt in three years and buy a new house by pursuing his career.
