On the 30th, Netflix original series Squid Game earned its first major U.S. award for Breakthrough Series ” Long Format (over 40 minutes) at the 2021 Gotham Awards.

Director Hwang Dong Hyuk shared joy on the stage with Lee Jung Jae and Jung Ho Yeon.

The director started off his speech with witty remarks, saying, “Ms. Jung just said, ‘If you’re nervous, imagine the audience naked.’ But it’s not very helping at the moment.”

“When I wrote this script 12 years ago in 2009, I did my best, but no one liked it ” they said it was too violent, absurd, weird,” Squid Game‘s creator Hwang Dong Hyuk said onstage, accepting the trophy. Once it aired, he said, “it took less than 12 days to become the No. 1 show on the planet.”

Squid Game star Lee Jung Jae was also nominated for Outstanding Performer in a New Series but narrowly missed out on the prize.
