Set in a private school where corruption is rampant, Melancholia depicts a story of a dedicated math teacher and a previous math genius who work together to overcome societal conventions and prejudices.

Im Soo Jung, who has always added her own color to every role she plays, will play Ji Yoon Soo this time. “As I read the script, I kept thinking about how beautiful the story was. My heart pounded and ached at the same time. So I thought I had to do this project and play the character named Ji Yoon Soo,” she shared.

Ji Yoon Soo is a math teacher who breaks the stereotype of mathematics, which makes you use certain formulas to find the right answer. In the system that revolves around “college entrance exams,” she’s a rebel.

The actress frankly opened up, “Ji Yoon Soo is a rare character in a society with fierce competition for entrance exams.” She continued, “More than anything else, the fact that she recognizes the uniqueness of Baek Seung Yoo (Lee Do Hyun), who had lost his sparkle because of personal trauma, before anyone else and that she tries so stubbornly to revive his extraordinary ability when everyone turns his back on him really impressed me.”

“I felt like this part of her kind of resembles me, and I got to understand JI Yoon Soo’s special perspective,” Im Soo Jung added. “Mathematics is an important element in the relationship between Ji Yoon Soo and Baek Seung Yoo. So I’m studying hard and even seeking advice from a math professor at filming sites.”

Meanwhile, Melancholia will premiere on November 3rd at 10:30 PM KST.
