SNL Korea is facing backlash after a recent parody of NewJeans’ Hanni, with some viewers accusing the show of racial insensitivity.
The controversial skit aired on the October 19th episode of SNL Korea Season 6 on Coupang Play, featuring actor Kim Eui Sung in a comedic role. In the skit, Ji Ye Eun portrayed Hanni, who recently made headlines for appearing at a National Assembly hearing, while Kim Eui Sung played a corporate executive who was seen taking a selfie with her at the event.
However, the parody sparked outrage among some viewers, who criticized it as “racial mockery” and “mocking the victim.” Some comments included, “This is racist,” and “What’s the point of the skit?” while others defended the skit, saying, “It’s just a parody.” The issue has sparked an online debate.
Hanni, along with ADOR CEO Kim Joo Young, attended the National Assembly’s Environment and Labor Committee on October 15th as a reference and witness. The hearing involved questions about bullying within the K-pop industry and its mishandling. This was a historic moment, as Hanni became the first active K-pop idol to participate in a National Assembly hearing. She had volunteered to attend to address the issue and was widely praised for her courage in standing up for NewJeans and their fans.
Some saw the SNL skit as a mockery of Hanni’s brave appearance at the hearing. Viewers took issue with the exaggerated portrayal of Hanni’s accent and her over-the-top emotional reactions, which some felt crossed the line into ridicule.
