After all the unique K-pop-oriented teasers and photo promotions, the movie Wild Sing finally hit theaters yesterday and the reaction was explosive. The film has topped the box office among new releases over the opening weekend, signaling a promising start.

The comedy film starring Gang Dong Won, Park Ji Hyun and Um Tae Goo is about “Triangle,” a three-member co-ed dance group that once swept the music industry but disbanded overnight after being caught up in an unexpected incident, embarked on a reckless challenge to seize a chance for a comeback after 20 years. The parody reflects the recent trend of older generation idols making their return to the stage and how idols are ultimately afflicted by jaw-dropping scandals in the long run.

The film has already grossed a cumulative total of 1,744,974,870 won (approximately $1.1 million), earned within just one day of its release. According to official reports, Wild Sing attracted 160,748 viewers on its opening day. This surpasses the highest-grossing and award-winning film of the year, The King’s Warden, starring Park Ji Hoon, which garnered over 117,783 viewers. It is a particularly astonishing feat as the movie mustered a high seat occupancy rate despite a relatively small number of screening locations.

Alongside this massive accomplishment, the response from actual moviegoers has also been enthusiastic. The film continues to rack up high ratings across all sites, including a CGV Egg Index of 95%, 9.2 points at Lotte Cinema, and 9.01 points on Naver. Audiences who watched the movie expressed their satisfaction with the non-stop laughter and unpredictable plot, with comments such as: “It made me laugh with pure intensity and then cry,” “I laughed like a crow for the first time in 4 years,“ and “The story makes a U-turn just when you think it’s going to turn left!”

In addition, critic reviews are pouring in for the passionate performances of the actors. With glowing, rave reviews, some notes mentioned, “They earned a group score of 1000 in total,” “Does Oh Jung Se owe something to the director? He lets go of everything in his acting, and it is unbelievable,” and “A chaotic comedy where Triangle puts us through it. It’s been a long time since I laughed so hard my stomach hurt.” Many claimed the comedy was as hilarious as Extreme Job and praised the actors for making the film hilarious from start to finish.

The movie has now been coined the “dark horse” by Korean audiences as Wild Sing rapidly emerged as an unexpected winner in this summer’s box office by captivating theaters with its wild momentum and popularity through word-of-mouth. Without a doubt, it has become a critically acclaimed must-see film of the year.
