Salmokji: Whispering Water has officially become the highest-grossing horror movie in Korean box office history.
According to the Korean Film Council, the film surpassed 3.15 million moviegoers as of May 17th, overtaking A Tale of Two Sisters, which had held the record for 23 years since its release in 2003.
The breakout horror hit follows a film crew that heads to a remote reservoir after a mysterious figure appears in road-view footage captured near the area. Once there, they come face-to-face with something terrifying lurking beneath the dark water.
The movie’s record-breaking run has firmly cemented Salmokji as one of the defining Korean horror films of its generation.
Even six weeks after release, the film continues to hold strong near the top of the box office, proving to be a rare long-running horror success story.
The movie has also drawn attention for introducing a fresh wave of horror talent, led by first-time feature director Lee Sang Min alongside a cast largely stepping into the horror genre for the first time, including Kim Hye Yoon and Lee Jong Won.
Fueled by strong word-of-mouth and growing buzz among audiences, Salmokji has become one of the biggest theatrical success stories of the spring season — and its momentum shows little sign of slowing down.
