IU is stepping into a striking new role in the upcoming MBC drama Perfect Crown.
Premiering next month, the series is set in a fictional 21st-century constitutional monarchy in Korea. The story follows a powerful heiress who has it all, but faces social limits because she was born a commoner. Her life becomes intertwined with a prince who has royal status but little control over his own life.
IU plays Seong Hee Joo, the ambitious CEO of Castle Beauty. Despite her success, she constantly confronts the barriers of her social status.
“I feel both nervous and excited,” IU said about taking on the role. “But more than anything, I am grateful that so many people are looking forward to it. I hope viewers enjoy the drama until the very end.”
IU revealed that the unique title first caught her attention when choosing the project after When Life Gives You Tangerines. “The title stayed with me,” she said. “Each character felt distinct, and I was especially drawn to Hee Joo. Her unpredictable choices and the motivation behind them made her really fascinating.”
Describing the character in three words, IU chose “ambition, temper, and charm.”
“At first, her ambition and sharp personality stand out,” IU explained. “But as the story unfolds and her emotional gaps begin to fill, you see more of her adorable and admirable sides.”
IU said Hee Joo’s defining trait is her bold approach, especially when building a relationship with Prince Yian, played by Byeon Woo Seok. Her relentless spirit and willingness to try again even after setbacks make the character especially compelling.
“Hee Joo is someone who has always had to prove herself and appear strong,” she said. “She is very skilled at hiding her vulnerable side with sharp expressions and attitude, but I wanted to make sure those moments of loneliness and softness still come through.”
She added that the drama features a fast-paced first half and evolves into a deeper, more emotional love story in the later episodes.
Perfect Crown premieres April 10th at 9:40 PM KST on MBC.
