Mijoo unexpectedly found herself at the center of an online etiquette debate after sharing a casual balcony barbecue photo.
On March 15th, the singer and TV personality posted a picture on Instagram with the caption “Title: On the balcony.”
The photo showed Mijoo grilling pork belly on a small tabletop grill set up on her apartment balcony. What immediately caught attention, however, was the tiny portion on the grill: just two slices of pork belly, half a mushroom, and a few cloves of garlic.
The minimal meal quickly became a talking point among friends and fans. STAYC member Yoon jokingly commented, “Unnie, why are you only eating two pieces?” Even Mijoo’s sister chimed in, teasing, “There’s not even enough fat to render. This is making me mad.”
Mijoo explained that she was grilling the meat little by little so it wouldn’t burn and said she chose the balcony because of the smell. Some acquaintances jokingly replied that it looked like she was just cleaning the grill.
But online, the bigger debate wasn’t about the small portion of food. Instead, many commenters focused on the fact that she was grilling meat on an apartment balcony.
Some users argued that cooking meat on a balcony in a shared residential building could be inconsiderate to neighbors, as smoke and strong food odors can drift into nearby units or onto laundry hung outside.
“This feels like pushing the smell onto neighbors because you don’t want it in your own home,” one commenter wrote. Others compared balcony grilling to noise complaints in apartment buildings, saying it can be just as stressful.
Still, some defended Mijoo, saying the criticism was excessive. “It’s her own balcony,” one user wrote. “People shouldn’t police someone for occasionally grilling a little food at home.”
What began as a simple snapshot of Mijoo’s meal has since sparked a broader conversation online about everyday apartment etiquette and shared living spaces.
