Super Junior member and Choi Si Won is at the center of a political controversy in South Korea.

The issue started after a cryptic social media post he made on February 19th, the same day former President Yoon Suk Yeol was sentenced to life in prison for his role in a failed insurrection related to his 2024 martial law declaration.

Si Won posted two traditional four-character idioms that roughly translate to: “Injustice will inevitably perish” and “A total collapse, like crumbling earth and shattering tiles.”

Although he didn’t directly mention the former president, many people saw the post as a comment on the court’s decision. Supporters of the former president praised Si Won, calling him a “true patriot,” while many people—particularly those who opposed the 2024 martial law—accused him of having right-wing sympathies.

As online attacks against Si Won grew, SM Entertainment decided to take legal action. They said they had collected evidence of repeated malicious posts and had filed a formal complaint with authorities. The agency also promised to take strong legal action against anyone spreading false information or mocking Si Won.

This isn’t the first time Si Won’s political views have caused trouble. Last year, he faced backlash for a post mourning the death of Charlie Kirk, a conservative American activist who was close to Donald Trump. Si Won had called Kirk an “American hero.”

The controversy has been heightened by Jeon Han Gil, a conservative history instructor, who invited Si Won to perform at a ‘Freedom Concert’ and called him a ‘passionate soul.’ He also encouraged the public to support Si Won as a representative of South Korea.

In response, an online hashtag campaign calling for Choi Si Won’s removal from Super Junior has emerged. The hashtag #siwon_out trended on Twitter until the morning of February 23rd, with angry fans expressing their frustration over his political statements. One tweet read, “I can’t believe I’m posting this, but if you go to that political concert, you better resign from SJ immediately. I don’t care where you stand politically, just don’t drag us or SJ into it #SIWON_OUT.”
