The production team behind Netflix’s Single’s Inferno 5 has officially shut down rumors that contestant Lee Sung Hun is the grandson of former South Korean President Lee Myung Bak.
During an interview on February 13th, Director Kim Jung Hyun addressed the swirling speculation directly. “We were curious too because people kept saying he resembled the former president in appearance and voice,” Kim admitted. “So we asked him directly, and he said, ‘It is not true at all.’ He confirmed they aren’t even distant relatives.”
Lee Sung Hun has been a hot topic not just for the rumors, but for his impressive resume. A UC Berkeley graduate and former Google engineer, he currently works as a quantitative trader in New York.
When asked if elite backgrounds are a requirement for casting, Director Kim Jae Won clarified, “Lee Sung Hun’s background just happened to be outstanding. Our program actually places more emphasis on external attractiveness compared to other dating shows.”
The directors also shared secrets about the intense filming environment. To ensure total immersion, cast members are banned from using phones and even knowing the time.
“We keep all mobile phones,” Director Kim Jung Hyun explained. “They don’t know what time it is, so they just guess it’s evening when the sun sets.”
As for the stunning outfits, about 90% are brought by the contestants themselves. “They have excellent fashion sense,” Director Kim noted. “Since this content stays on Netflix forever, everyone puts in the effort to make it special.”
Addressing skepticism about whether the show leads to real-life couples, Director Kim Jae Won remained optimistic. “There are actually quite a few real couples, including from this season,” he shared. “We specifically cast people who were open to public relationships.”
The current status of the final couples will be revealed in the upcoming Single’s Inferno Reunion special.
Lastly, the team spoke out in defense of contestant Mina Sue Choi, who faced criticism during the season. “She brought a lot of energy to the show,” said Director Kim. “Now that the season has ended, we hope viewers will send their support to everyone.”
