Cha Eun Woo is facing intense scrutiny after reports said he received notice of an income tax reassessment exceeding 20 billion KRW (approx. 14 million USD), a figure that would be unprecedented for a Korean celebrity if upheld.
His agency, Fantagio, has stressed that the case is not finalized and that no official assessment has been confirmed.
Online, a chart comparing major celebrity tax cases has circulated widely, placing Cha Eun Woo sixth among the largest cases worldwide alongside Fan Bingbing, Cristiano Ronaldo, Willie Nelson, and Shakira. While the list broadly reflects real cases, experts note that some figures were incomplete or outdated.
Based on verified cases, Cha Eun Woo’s reported amount would likely rank around seventh globally rather than sixth. Chinese actor Deng Lun, for example, paid approximately 20.6 billion KRW in back taxes and penalties in 2022, while Shakira later reached a settlement in Spain that reduced her final payment significantly.
Domestically, the numbers would stand out sharply. Previous high-profile tax reassessment cases involving celebrities have been significantly smaller, including Yoo Yeon Seok (7 billion KRW), Lee Ha Nee (6 billion KRW), Cho Jin Woong (1.1 billion KRW), Lee Joon Gi (900 million KRW), and Park Yu Chun (400 million KRW).
Industry observers note that celebrity tax disputes have shifted in recent years. Instead of undeclared cash income, cases increasingly focus on how earnings are structured, including the use of family-run corporations and the transfer of image and advertising rights.
That appears central to Cha Eun Woo’s situation. Tax authorities reportedly believe income was routed through a corporation established by his mother to apply a lower corporate tax rate. Fantagio maintains that the key question is whether the entity qualifies as a legitimate taxable business, adding that the matter remains under review.
