My Daughter is a Zombie is off to a staggering start, topping the box office on opening day and rewriting records as this summer’s biggest breakout hit.
Directed by Pil Gamseong, the comedy-drama tells the story of a devoted father who secretly undergoes training to protect his daughter, the last remaining zombie on Earth.
Within just two days of release, My Daughter is a Zombie surpassed 703,010 cumulative moviegoers, according to data from the Korean Film Council. Among Korean non-franchise films released in the past five years, My Daughter is a Zombie now holds the highest opening-day attendance—a historic feat that has the industry buzzing.
And audiences are loving it. The film currently boasts a 91% Egg Score on CGV, 9.1 rating on Lotte Cinema, and 9.08 on Naver.
Reactions from moviegoers have been overwhelmingly positive: “1000% satisfaction. I laughed, I cried. This was just the kindest, most heartwarming film,” “The perfect summer movie,” and “It’s comedy in all the right places, and the emotional payoff at the end really hits.”
Unsurprisingly, much of the praise is directed at Cho Jung Seok, already known for summer hits like Exit and Pilot. Fans are calling his performance in My Daughter is a Zombie “next-level,” saying: “Cho Jung Seok is officially the man of the summer. Thank you for this gem!” “He gives the funniest and most emotional performance all in one,” and “He says laugh, and I laugh. He cries, and I cry!”
