Law and the City director Park Seung Woo and cinematographer Pyo Sang Woo recently opened up about the creative process behind the critically acclaimed series.

Park emphasized the show’s commitment to authenticity. “The heart of this drama lies in its characters and how real it feels,” he said. “I didn’t want it to feel distant from our everyday lives. That’s why we filmed most of it on location in Seoul’s Seocho District, the actual setting of the story.”

To capture the quiet details of everyday life, Park stayed closely involved with his cast. “We put a lot of care into capturing even the smallest, most ordinary moments,” he explained. “That started with casting, we were thoughtful from the very beginning. I’m truly grateful to every actor, not just our leads, but everyone who appeared on screen.”

One of the biggest challenges came during the filming of one of the show’s most talked-about scenes, the Hong Kong flashback, where Ahn Ju Hyung (Lee Jong Suk) and Kang Hee Ji (Moon Ga Young) meet for the first time. While the scene has been praised by viewers for its emotional depth, Park revealed that Lee Jong Suk suffered a painful fall during the kiss scene.

“We almost had to stop filming,” Park said. “But he pushed through and stayed completely focused. It was one of those moments where his dedication really stood out.”

Cinematographer Pyo Sang Woo also weighed in on the creative choices behind the memorable scene. “Ju Hyung and Hee Ji’s story begins with a chance meeting in Hong Kong and leads to a reunion that feels like fate,” he said. “We wanted the emotions to feel timeless, so we picked locations with a classic vibe and used film-inspired techniques to give the scene a slightly rough, nostalgic texture, like a memory you’ve held onto for years.”

Law and the City airs Saturdays and Sundays at 9:20 PM KST.
