IU has spoken out about being mocked as “Left-IU” (a combination of “leftist” and “IU”) after she prepaid for drinks and snacks for fans attending a rally calling for President Yoon’s impeachment last year.

IU said, “It’d be a lie if I said I wasn’t upset,” but added, “It’s part of what I have to endure.”

In an interview held on April 2nd at a hotel in Seoul, for the promotion of the Netflix series When Life Gives You Tangerines, IU addressed the controversy, saying, “I haven’t personally watched the videos mocking me, but it would be a lie if I said I wasn’t upset. Still, tt’s part of what I have to endure.”

She added, “However, if certain comments cross the line or cause significant misunderstandings that we, the label and I, feel shouldn’t be ignored, then I believe action should be taken.”

Reflecting on the rumors and misunderstandings she’s dealt with throughout her career, IU said, “It would be a lie to say I’ve never felt wronged. But I also know that the public often sees me in a more positive light than I might deserve. I never expected to receive this much love for so long while doing this job. I think many people have a better impression of me than who I really am.”

In December of last year, IU prepaid for beverages and pastries for fans who were attending the protest demanding President Yoon’s impeachment. While many applauded IU and other celebrities who offered similar gestures at the rally, far-right groups opposed to the impeachment mocked and criticized her for the act.
