After years of uncertainty due to Yoo Ah In’s drug scandal, The Match is finally making its way to audiences, and director Kim Hyeong Ju isn’t holding back on his feelings about the situation.
A press screening for The Match took place today at CGV Yongsan I’Park Mall. The film, based on a true story, follows Go legend Cho Hoon Hyun (Lee Byung Hun) as he faces a shocking defeat against his own protégé, Lee Chang Ho (Yoo Ah In), and fights to reclaim his dominance.
Addressing the elephant in the room, Kim admitted, “When we first cast both actors, I felt like I had the world in my hands, but also an immense sense of pressure. To be honest, it was an irresponsible and disappointing situation for a lead actor to be involved in. Beyond being an actor, he is a member of society who made a mistake and is now facing the consequences.”
Reflecting on the film’s uncertain fate, Kim described it as a nightmarish ordeal. “It felt like I was trapped in a tunnel with no way out. But now, I finally see the light at the end—the film’s release. It’s an overwhelming relief.”
With the movie inevitably linked to Yoo Ah In’s scandal, Kim acknowledged the controversy but pleaded with audiences to judge the film on its own merits. “I can’t dictate public opinion, but I do ask—if possible—that people watch The Match for what it is. This film went through a lot even before its release, and I hope it’s received with an open heart.”
The Match hits theaters on March 26th.
