Bae Doona guested on MBC TV’s current affairs program Son Suk-hee’s Questions on March 4th, where she looked back on her film A Girl at My Door and shared her thoughts on working with the late Kim Sae Ron.

Talking about the film, Bae Doona said, “A Girl at My Door was the first and only project I chose to star in the moment I read the script. Normally, I take my time, wondering whether I can fully bring a character to life. But with this film, I just knew I had to do it.”

Released in 2014, A Girl at My Door follows Young Nam (Bae Doona), a police chief reassigned to a quiet seaside town, as she tries to protect 14-year-old Do Hee (Kim Sae Ron), a girl trapped in an abusive environment. Bae Doona famously took on the role without pay, and Kim Sae Ron’s performance earned her an invitation to the Cannes Film Festival.

The broadcast also interviewed the film’s director, Jung Joo Ri.

“I was a rookie director back then, and I always wondered how Bae Doona came to trust me and take on the project,” Jung recalled. “I once asked her, ‘You barely knew anything about me—what made you say yes?’ And she told me, ‘This film needs to be seen in theaters. I want to stand by Do Hee’s side.’”

Jung continued, “Those words stayed with me. It made me realize that Bae Doona is an actress who always puts the meaning of a project first.” Holding back tears, she added, “I still can’t forget the way she said she wanted to be by Do Hee’s side, even in the face of such a painful story.”

Toward the end of the program, a scene from A Girl at My Door was shown, followed by a caption that read, “In memory of the late Kim Sae Ron, who gave an unforgettable performance as Do Hee.” The heartfelt tribute left a deep impression on viewers.
