Choo Young Woo is turning heads with his transformative performance in Netflix’s latest hit series The Trauma Code: Heroes on Call, proving his versatility as an emerging talent.
The medical drama follows genius military surgeon Baek Kang Hyuk (Ju Ji Hoon) as he arrives to revive a struggling trauma center. Choo takes on the role of Yang Jae Won, a top medical fellow from Korea University who becomes Baek’s first disciple, captivated by his mentor’s extraordinary surgical skills. His character tirelessly works around the clock for patients hovering between life and death.
Working alongside Ju Ji Hoon, whom Choo considers a role model both on and off screen, has elevated his performance as both an actor and in his portrayal of a medical professional. Their mentor-mentee “bromance” intensifies as they race against time to maintain the critical golden hour in emergency care.
Critics are praising Choo’s dramatic transformation for the role. The actor, who has seamlessly transitioned from the period project The Tale of Lady Ok to the contemporary drama, completely disappears into Yang Jae Won’s character. Choo went the extra mile, deliberately adopting an awkward gait and hairstyle to embody his somewhat clumsy character.
Yang Jae Won’s ultimate goal of “being able to save lives by himself” resonates with viewers as he approaches each patient with genuine care, highlighting the show’s humanistic elements. Despite frequent clashes with Baek’s harsh training methods, he consistently prioritizes patient care. The growth of Yang Jae Won as a doctor has become a major draw for viewers.
Meanwhile, The Trauma Code has already claimed the #1 spot on Netflix Korea’s Top 10 series list since its release.
