tvN has addressed growing speculation that its highly anticipated 20th-anniversary project, The Second Signal, has been pulled from the second-half programming schedule.
A representative from tvN told SPOTV News on April 17th that the official broadcast schedule for The Second Signal remains undecided. Regarding reports that the Apple TV Plus series Pachinko would be aired in its place, the official clarified, “We’ve confirmed that Pachinko will air, but the exact release date is still up in the air.”
Earlier that day, a media outlet reported that The Second Signal had been officially removed from the lineup for the rest of the year, with Pachinko set to replace its timeslot.
The Second Signal is the sequel to the massive 2016 hit Signal. Kim Hye Soo, Lee Je Hoon, and Cho Jin Woong reunited for the project, which finished filming last year. Originally intended to celebrate tvN’s 20th anniversary this year, the production faced a major setback last December when Cho Jin Woong admitted to past criminal activities and announced his retirement from the industry.
Cho Jin Woong was embroiled in allegations involving vehicle theft and sexual assault committed alongside a group of peers during his teens. He reportedly faced a criminal trial in his second year of high school for robbery and rape under the 1994 legal standards and was sent to a juvenile detention center. Further allegations emerged regarding his adult life, including fines for assault and a license revocation for drunk driving. Following these revelations, Cho issued an apology and announced his retirement.
In response to the situation, tvN previously stated, “The Second Signal is a project that represents the collective effort of numerous staff members, actors and stakeholders from planning through production. To preserve the value that Signal holds, we will exert every effort to find the best possible solution for the work and our viewers, even if it takes some time.”
