Lee Jang Woo, who has recently made headlines for his fuller appearance, finds himself at the center of controversy following statements about his acting career drought.
In the recent episode of MBC’s I Live Alone, the actor candidly expressed his concerns about the lack of casting opportunities, stating, “I’m getting no offers.” His comments, coupled with his visibly fuller appearance, drew mixed reactions from viewers, with some labeling his concerns as “privileged complaints” and suggesting he focus on variety shows for the time being.
In a separate appearance on Jung Jun Ha’s YouTube channel “JungJunHahaha” last month, Lee revealed the behind-the-scenes story of his casting in My Only One. Following his military discharge at age 33, Lee talked about how he secured the role by sending a lengthy text to writer Kim Sa Kyung, leading to speculation about using connections to get the role, especially since the drama was reportedly in the final casting stages when Lee joined. Some speculated that his addition might have displaced another actor.
The controversy deepened when Lee discussed his role as Wang Dae Ruk in the drama, admitting, “The writer and director wanted me to lose weight, but I intentionally didn’t.” This revelation sparked debate about professional commitment, with critics pointing to both “using connections” and “lack of self-management.”
However, supporters have emerged to defend Lee, arguing that “weight gain isn’t wrong, and the criticism is excessive” and “if he’s happy, that’s what matters.”
The situation has left many fans disappointed in Lee’s apparent passive approach to securing roles while seemingly not maintaining the industry’s physical standards.
