The world of Korean entertainment is buzzing with the announcement of a star-studded lineup for the upcoming fantasy film Omniscient Reader. The casting board, revealed on January 24th, includes names like Lee Min Ho, Ahn Hyo Seop, Chae Soo Bin, Shin Seung Ho, Nana, Park Ho San, Choi Young Joon, and BLACKPINK’s Jisoo, marking a gathering of talents in what’s slated to be a fantasy epic. Having started filming last December, the production is currently underway.
Omniscient Reader spins a tale where a fantasy novel becomes a reality. Kim Dok Ja, the only person who knows the novel’s ending, joins forces with the novel’s protagonist Yoo Jung Hyuk on a mission to save the world. The story is based on a popular web novel that began in 2018 and has since amassed over 200 million views.
Lee Min Ho brings to life the novel’s hero, Yoo Jung Hyuk, a character with unrivaled looks and formidable combat skills, blessed with the ability to constantly return from death. Ahn Hyo Seop portrays the ordinary office worker, Kim Dok Ja – the sole person who has finished reading the otherwise ignored serial novel, and thus, the only one aware of its ending.
The film also introduces key companions who join Kim Dok Ja on his journey in the novel’s world. Chae Soo Bin takes on the role of Yoo Sang Ah, a former colleague of Kim Dok Ja, and joins him at the onset of the world’s destruction. Shin Seung Ho and Nana appear as characters from the novel; Shin as the soldier-turned-character Lee Hyun Sung with formidable defense skills, and Nana as Jung Hee Won, depicted as a goddess of justice.
BLACKPINK’s Jisoo joins the ensemble, interpreting the role of Yoo Jung Hyuk’s comrade, Lee Ji Hye, with exceptional combat skills that help them overcome numerous crises.
The film is directed by The Terror Live helmer Kim Byung Woo, promising a highly immersive experience. It is co-produced by Realize Pictures, the production house behind the Along with the Gods series.
The production team expressed high expectations, stating, “The actors were 200% immersed in their roles during the reading. They filled the set with their heat and energy. We aim to open a new horizon in Korean cinema with a grand worldview never seen before.”
