This new drama SBS is preparing for 2021 is drawing keen attention.
At the 2020 SBS Drama Awards, held on Dec 31, teaser videos for the dramas scheduled to air this year were unveiled. And among them, Joseon Exorcist (literal title), set after the establishment of the Joseon dynasty, became the hottest topic.
Joseon Exorcist is a Korean-style exorcism fantasy historical drama about a war against evil spirits from the west that have engulfed the entire Joseon. It will build up an original worldview by adding the concept of “exorcism” to the imagination of Yi Bang Won (King Taejong), who was patrolling the North, facing a mysterious creature that is trying to reign over humans.
The teaser video featured actors Kan Woo Sung, Jang Dong Yoon, Park Sung Hoon, and more. The horrifying and gruesome appearance of the evil spirits put the chill down viewers’ spines, while The Nokdu Flower and Six Flying Dragons director Shin Kyung Soo’s unique taste shown in the teaser raised more expectations.
However, the reactions were clearly split in two. Some showed their anticipation over the star-studded cast lineup and suspenseful plot, while some expressed their concerns about it “copying Netflix’s Kingdom.”
Here are some of the comments: “Come on, this is just a slightly different version of ‘Kingdom.'” “Is it just me, or did I just see another trailer for ‘Kingdom’ with different actors?” “This is the same writer who wrote ‘Mr. Queen.’ She has problems.” “Kind of looks like ‘Game of Throne’ too.” “But the creature genre is pretty much the same always. Can’t say this is a copy.”
