BLACKPINK became the first K-pop girl group to be named “Group of the Year” at the Hitmakers 2020 by Variety.
On Dec 4 at 10 a.m. (local time), Variety released the list for their Hitmakers 2020. And among the names, BLACKPINK has been chosen as “Group of the Year.”
“Hitmakers” is an award ceremony that selects singer-songwriter, producer, composer and label who contributed to producing the most popular song of the year. BLACKPINK stood shoulder to shoulder with A-list artists like Harry Styles, J Balvin, Lil Baby and Lewis Capaldi.
BLACKPINK said, “This won’t be possible without you guys and we want to say thank you again. 2020 has been a memorable year for all of us as we released our first full album and received so many encouraging messages from everyone. Thank you so much BLINK and we love you.”
Variety paid attention to the group’s mesmerizing achievements this year. They wrote, “After becoming the first K-pop girl group to perform at Coachella, the girls took to collaborating with such A-list artists as Lady Gaga — their sweet duet, “Sour Candy,” appears on Gaga’s “Chromatica” album — and Selena Gomez,” and added, “Their latest music video, “How You Like That,” garnered 86.3 million views in 24 hours on YouTube when it debuted in June, setting a record.”
But what they focused on was BLACKPINK’s first regular album THE ALBUM. “The eight-song collection topped the iTunes chart in 57 regions around the world and made Blackpink the first-ever million-selling K-pop girl group — a quarter of those album sales coming from the U.S.,” they wrote. “In fact, ‘Ice Cream,’ Blackpink’s joint single with Gomez, has found a welcoming home on Top 40 radio, where it’s amassed more than 40,000 spins since its August release.”
Meanwhile, BLACKPINK will play livestreamed concert on YouTube titled “YG PALM STAGE – 2020 BLACKPINK: THE SHOW” on Dec 27 at midnight (EST) and 2 p.m. KST.
