Amid calls for military service benefits for the world star BTS in political circles, the Korean Military Manpower Administration, which is in charge of the military service, expressed its opposition, saying, “It’s a matter of fairness.”

It is the first time that the Military Manpower Administration (MMA) has made a position on the issue of BTS members’ military service.

MMA officially announced its position, citing the National Assembly’s decision in November last year. “At the time, we decided to exclude the inclusion of art personnel in the field of popular pop culture from the review because it does not fit the overall stance of reducing alternative service and the government’s basic position to enhance fairness and equity in the execution of military service. The decision remains unchanged.”

On November 21 last year, the government finalized “plans to improve the alternative military service system” that maintains the alternative service system for art and sports personnel but does not include pop culture artists, explaining that this is a measure that “considered fairness and equity in fulfilling military duty.”

However, MMA has left open the possibility of discussing the postponement of enlistment. They added, “We will also review the postponement of conscription and recruitment of outstanding people in the field of pop culture with related ministries based on national consensus.”
