>> ‘King the Land’ Episode 8 Recap: Junho and YoonA Share a Breathtaking First Kiss
JTBC’s drama King the Land has come under fire for portraying an Arab character in a culturally insensitive manner.
Since July 9th, numerous overseas fans have expressed their dissatisfaction with the show, giving it a meager one out of ten stars on IMDB. A particular scene in the drama involving Goo Won (played by Junho) and Chen Sa Rang (YoonA) serving an Arab hotel VIP guest has drawn criticism. The portrayal of the Arab prince, who is depicted as the 13th richest man in the world, showcases his immense wealth as he enjoys the company of women at an expensive bar and flirts with Sa Rang. Goo Won refers to him as a “playboy.”
Arab viewers have expressed negative opinions about an Indian actor playing the role of the Arab VIP guest, with some labeling the scene as “racist.”
In response to the controversy, a drama official stated, “The characters, regions, and place names in the drama are entirely fictional, without any intention to caricature or distort a particular culture. We will exercise additional caution and sensitivity in producing an enjoyable show that respects diversity.”
