Cosmopolitan Korea unveiled its October pictorial and interview with Yoo Seung Ho.
The shoot highlighted a new side of the actor, who recently earned praise for playing psychopathic artist Yoo Sung Won in SBS drama Flex X Cop 2, which ended on September 19th.
Speaking about his pictorial, Yoo said, “I really like the mood we shot today. It might look dark or serious at first glance, but I mean that in a good way. I like showing a bright and energetic side too, but I also want to show something heavier and more reserved.”
Yoo also reflected on returning to a villain role for the first time in 14 years.
“With this project, I worked closely with the director from the very beginning to build the character,” he said. “Yoo Sung Won has this strange emotional response to corpses, and we discussed how to express that, as well as the way he looks down on the people around him as if they were objects.”
“I actually wanted to give him certain repeated habits or behaviors, but Sung Won didn’t have that many scenes. I thought it would be difficult to establish those traits clearly, so there were things I decided to leave out.”
Yoo said the role also gave him a chance to explore a wider range as an actor.
“There are countless reasons why a character becomes good or evil, and the last time I really got to explore that kind of range was probably in ‘Missing You.’ That’s why I said I wanted to do ‘Flex X Cop 2’ before I’d even finished reading the script,” he said. “I hope this project opens the door for me to take on not only good and evil characters, but also those who think in ways I haven’t even imagined.”
Yoo will also hold his first film photography exhibition, “BLUE HOUR,” beginning October 3rd. The exhibition will feature photos he took in the U.S. and Mongolia.
“I really don’t want to hear, ‘This is really bad,'” he said with a laugh. “Of course, I should accept criticism about the things I’m lacking, but I’m still doing my best to make sure everyone can enjoy the exhibition.”
Asked what he hopes to photograph next, Yoo said, “After going to Mongolia, I realized I want to travel more. I especially enjoyed capturing everyday life and people in other countries. Preparing for this exhibition has also changed the way I take photographs and the way I approach photography.”
He also spoke about how his perspective behind the camera has changed.
“The person overseeing this exhibition told me to photograph the same subject several times,” Yoo said. “I tried it, and every photo really felt different. I’ve also started changing the eye level I shoot from. I used to mostly shoot downward, but I learned that sitting down and meeting the subject at eye level can completely change the feeling of an image.”
Asked what side of himself he has yet to discover, Yoo said, “If I get the chance, I’d like to lose myself completely in a project again and see myself intensely living as that character.”
