SBS’s investigative program Unanswered Questions is seeking information about Perry, the rapper and producer who helped shape YG Entertainment’s early sound and has reportedly been missing for years.
On September 17th, the program posted a public appeal asking to hear from anyone who knows Perry’s whereabouts or is in contact with his family. According to the notice, Perry was last seen in Los Angeles in 2010 after working in the Korean music industry since the mid-1990s.
Born in 1971 and originally from Oakland, California, Perry moved to Guam in his late teens, where he began working as a DJ, rapper and dancer. Through his longtime friend Sean, he later contributed to Jinusean’s first album and became one of YG’s key producers during the company’s early years.
Perry went on to work extensively with artists including Jinusean, Lexy and BIGBANG, playing an influential role in establishing YG’s early musical identity. His name disappeared from the company’s album credits following his work on BIGBANG’s Japanese album in 2011, and Sean later said he had lost contact with Perry after the producer returned to the United States.
Perry’s nephew previously said that his family had been unable to locate him since he was last seen in Los Angeles in 2010. The family sought help from the U.S. State Department and other government channels but received little assistance. His nephew also dismissed speculation that Perry had returned to Guam, saying no one there had seen him for years.
His unexplained disappearance has fueled speculation online. In July, 1TYM’s Song Baek Kyoung recalled that Perry had undergone a noticeable change before cutting off contact with people around him.
“I can more or less guess why he left YG, but that’s not something I can say myself,” Song wrote. “Perry used to smoke heavily and go drinking at clubs in Hongdae every weekend until he was completely drunk. But around the time we were working on Lexy’s first album, he suddenly quit smoking and drinking and cut off contact with people he knew.”
Song added that when he asked Perry for his new phone number, Perry told him there was no reason for him to have it.
With Perry’s whereabouts still unknown, Unanswered Questions is now seeking information from anyone who may know what happened to him or be in contact with his family.
