RESCENE‘s Minami has revealed that her Japanese friends have been teasing her about embracing the gyaru look after becoming a K-pop idol.
Appearing on the September 16th episode of MBC’s Radio Star, Minami shared how her friends back home reacted after seeing her recent transformation.
“My friends in Japan contacted me and teased me, saying, ‘You’ve been getting pretty popular lately, but why are you suddenly doing gyaru?'” she recalled.
“They knew I’d been going to auditions because I wanted to become a K-pop idol, so they were surprised when I suddenly showed up with the whole gyaru getup,” she added.
Gyaru is a Japanese fashion and beauty subculture that became particularly prominent in the 1990s and 2000s, known for its bold makeup, distinctive fashion and playful, expressive style. Minami noted that the aesthetic has recently made a comeback in Japan with a more contemporary spin.
Despite growing up in Japan, however, Minami said she had little connection to gyaru culture before moving to Korea.
“I had nothing to do with gyaru when I was still in Japan. I actually tried it for the first time in Korea,” she said.
Her mother, however, turned out to be an unexpected source of inspiration. “My mom wasn’t exactly a full-on gyaru, but she dressed somewhat like one and even talked in a similar way. She and her friends used to talk like that back then.”
Minami added that she now turns to her mother for advice when creating gyaru-themed content.
“I’ve learned a lot from my mom while making the content,” she said with a laugh. “She even corrects the way I do my eyeliner.”
