Jang Dong Ju has announced his retirement from acting.

On May 15th, Jang Dong Ju shared the news on Instagram, writing, “As of today, I’m letting go of my life as actor Jang Dong Ju.”

“Even though I’m leaving the stage, I’ll never forget the love and support you gave me,” he continued. “Thank you sincerely for loving actor Jang Dong Ju until now.”

The announcement comes months after the actor revealed he had fallen victim to a phone hacking and blackmail scheme that left him facing billions of won in losses.

Back in November, Jang Dong Ju sparked concern after posting a black screen with the message “I’m sorry” on Instagram before disappearing from social media. In January, he later explained that his phone had been completely hacked after receiving a call from an unknown number.

“At that point, I borrowed money by any means possible,” he said at the time. “My family even sold their home for me. The urgent debts led to even more debt, and I ended up losing billions of won (millions of USD) and drowning in debt.”

He also parted ways with his new agency just one month after signing with them.

Jang Dong Ju made his debut in 2017 with the KBS drama School 2017 and went on to appear in dramas including Criminal Minds and Undercover Teacher, as well as films such as Honest Candidate and Handsome Guys. Most recently, he appeared in the SBS drama No Tail to Tell, which wrapped earlier this year.
