Son Seung Won is facing a four-year prison sentence after reports emerged suggesting he even tried to have his girlfriend remove the dashcam storage device.
The Seoul Western District Court will hold the first-instance sentencing hearing for Son, who was indicted on charges including violations of the Road Traffic Act, on June 11 at 2:00 PM. During this final hearing, the prosecution requested that the court sentence Son to four years in prison.
Son was arrested at the scene last November after driving the wrong way on the Gangbyeon Expressway for approximately two minutes with a blood alcohol content of 0.165%—more than double the license revocation threshold of 0.08%. Investigators revealed shocking details suggesting that Son attempted to hide evidence by telling his girlfriend, “My car is at the Yongsan Police Station, so go take out the dashcam storage device.”
The controversy intensified because this incident marked Son Seung Won’s fifth drunk driving offense. In a 2018 drunk driving accident, he had testified that his passenger, actor Jung Hwi, was the one driving. However, the situation was later reversed after Jung Hwi revealed, “Son Seung Won was actually the driver.” Jung Hwi stated during the police investigation that Son had told him, “If I get caught this time, I’ll be severely punished, so please say you were driving.”
The scandal did not end there. Reports indicate that Son was also caught driving without a license on the 8th, just six days before this trial. Although Son appealed for leniency during the proceedings, attention is focused on the possibility of a heavy sentence due to the accumulation of repeated drunk driving, false statements, and attempts to conceal evidence.
