Shin Sae Kyeong recently sat down for a candid interview on popular YouTube variety show Fairy Jae Hyung, where she finally broke her silence on one of the most controversial finales in television history: the ending of the 2009 sitcom High Kick Through the Roof.
Looking back on the production, Shin described a filming schedule that felt more like a marathon than a TV shoot. The show was a daily sitcom, meaning the cast essentially lived on set for an entire year. Host Jung Jae Hyung, who once made a cameo on the show, joked that the filming was so grueling he tried to quit after just one day.
Despite the long hours, Shin revealed a surprising soft spot for her character, a live-in housekeeper. She shared, “The dressing room felt like my actual home because my character lived in the house. It was the one place I felt comfortable.”
For those who missed the cultural phenomenon, the finale of High Kick! remains legendary for all the wrong reasons. In a shocking twist for a comedy, the two lead characters (played by Shin and Choi Daniel) died in a car crash during the final minutes.
The backlash at the time was so intense that it felt less like a TV discussion and more like a national crisis. Shin admitted, “People still ask me about it, even 15 years later. Looking back, it was just a sitcom, but the public reaction was so massive it felt like a major social issue.”
Shin recalled what it was like watching the final episode with the cast and crew during their wrap-up party. While they were celebrating their hard work, they could feel the mood shifting across the country. “The vibe in the room was… unusual,” she recalled, describing the realization that the finale was landing like a lead balloon with the public.
Jung Jae Hyung noted that “the outside world had become quite hostile” as fans processed the tragic ending in real-time.
Shin, however, views the lingering controversy as a testament to how much the audience loved the characters, though she jokingly added that she still has to “choose her words very carefully” when discussing the finale to avoid reigniting the flames.
