Song Hye Kyo is opening up about her personal growth through challenging times, including her highly publicized divorce.

In a revealing interview on Jung Jae Hyung’s YouTube channel “Fairy Jaehyung,” the actress spoke candidly about her journey. When Jung noted her seeming at peace, Song responded, “I hear that a lot these days, that I seem really comfortable. I’ve experienced so many things in life—both good experiences and challenging ones as a woman and as an actress. I’ve had happy moments too. I think all these experiences have taught me valuable life lessons.”

The conversation turned to Song’s dramatic career transformation, from her award-winning turn in Netflix’s The Glory to her upcoming horror film Dark Nuns. Her performance in The Glory earned her the prestigious Baeksang Arts Awards’ Best Actress in Television and the Blue Dragon Series Awards’ Grand Prize.

The actress revealed her motivation for recent bold career choices: “I was doing similar genres and similar characters, and at some point, I became tired of my own acting. I thought, ‘If I’m feeling this way, how boring must it be for viewers watching me?'”

She continued, “That’s why when news about ‘The Glory’ came out, I think viewers who were already bored with my acting didn’t have expectations. But when I suddenly appeared in the revenge plot with a completely different character, I think they were several times more excited.” Song added, “If I had explored diverse genres earlier, people wouldn’t have thought, ‘Song Hye Kyo always does the same thing.’ I just kept doing similar things, which made it boring for both me and the viewers.”

Speaking about her upcoming thriller Dark Nuns, where she plays Sister Yunia, a nun who will stop at nothing to save a boy possessed by an evil spirit, Song praised her co-star Jeon Yeo Been: “Seeing her so passionate and contemplating so much, sometimes I thought to myself, ‘Why don’t you think as deeply as she does? You should think more.’ I’m fortunate to keep meeting such great co-workers who stimulate me and make me reflect on myself.”

Meanwhile, Dark Nuns, which follows a group of people performing forbidden rituals to save a boy possessed by a powerful evil spirit, is set to hit theaters on January 24th.
