Following its global premiere on Disney Plus, the highly anticipated Korean live-action adaptation of The Remarried Empress has received mixed reactions from both domestic and international audiences. While the star-studded ensemble has drawn strong praise for compelling performances and on-screen chemistry, the show faces sharp criticism over its Western imperial visual styling, costume quality and interior mise-en-scène.

A Familiar Makjang Flavor in an Unfamiliar Court

South Korean media outlet ize magazine highlighted how the series successfully infuses classic K-drama makjang soap-opera tropes into an atypical Western imperial fantasy setting. The publication noted that the familiar flavor of palace intrigue and betrayal provides reliable entertainment despite the alien environment.

Special praise was reserved for Shin Mina‘s dignified presence and the seamless CGI realization of Heinrey’s bird form. “Even when Heinrey appears as a bird, his character still comes through clearly, overcoming a critical hurdle in adapting the webnovel into live action,” the outlet remarked, adding that the initial four episodes navigate the inherent risks of a niche genre with surprising finesse.

Praised Performances Clash with “Cosplay-Level” Wardrobe

Entertainment daily OSEN gave high marks to the cast’s ability to ground the exaggerated webnovel premise. Ju Ji Hoon‘s shameless depiction of the unfaithful emperor, Lee Se Young’s layered villainy, Shin Mina’s refined restraint, and Lee Jong Suk‘s flirtatious charm were cited as standout highlights.

However, OSEN criticized the costumes and some casting choices. The review pointed out that several outfits fell into “cheap, cosplay-level quality,” creating an awkward disconnect when worn by an all-Korean cast in a Western setting and breaking immersion and making some scenes unintentionally funny. The outlet also noted a slight lack of romantic tension between Shin Mina and Ju Ji Hoon, as well as age mismatches in the supporting cast. While falling short of the production standards of period dramas like Bridgerton, the outlet concluded that the series still earns a passing grade for boldly attempting to create a full-scale romance-fantasy world within the K-drama framework.

Inconsistent Tone and Confined Interiors

Media outlet MyDaily observed that while the series is undeniably unique within the contemporary drama landscape, technical flaws disrupt the viewing experience. Standout sequences—such as the romantic waltz between Shin Mina and Lee Jong Suk, and Jung Young Joo’s commanding presence as the Grand Duchess—received praise. Lee Se Young delivered an exceptionally impressive performance as a seemingly innocent yet venomous antagonist, adding that “Lee Se Young’s performance alone brings to life the intriguing character who approaches Shin Mina, appearing cheerful while hiding a snake-like nature within.”

Conversely, MyDaily pointed out jarring tonal discrepancies in speech patterns, noting that while some actors adopt formal period cadence, others deliver lines in indistinguishably modern tones. The review also criticized the indoor sets. Although the production filmed at German castles and Czech gardens, some interiors looked more like “Hongdae escape rooms” than grand royal palaces, taking away from the show’s atmosphere.

Global Viewers Echo Domestic Sentiments

International viewers have voiced similar contrasts online.

Critical reactions abroad have drawn unflattering comparisons between the lighting and wardrobe and “low-budget social media short-form dramas,” alongside remarks on awkward age casting.

At the same time, the romantic sparks, playful dynamic between the leads, and lavish ballroom sequences continue to drive high engagement and fervent discussion across global streaming communities.
