Kang Ha Neul is opening up about working opposite Jung Hae In in the upcoming Korean animated film Gill — despite never actually meeting him during the recording process.
Kang spoke about the film at a press screening held August 26th at CGV Yongsan I’Park Mall in Seoul, where he was joined by director Ahn Jae Hoon, Yoo Jae Myung and Kim Sun Young.
Based on the novel by Ku Byung Mo, Gill follows Gon, a boy who develops gills after being thrown into deep water, and the people who become his entire world. Jung voices Gon, while Kang plays Gang Ha, the person who opens up a new world for him.
The relationship between Gon and Gang Ha has long drawn attention from fans of the original novel because it resists an easy label, encompassing elements of love, friendship and family.
But despite playing characters so closely connected, Kang said he and Jung never had the chance to record together.
“I was disappointed that I didn’t get a chance to talk with Hae In personally,” Kang said.
He noted that the process was not entirely different from post-recording dialogue for live-action films, where actors often enter the recording booth alone rather than working face-to-face with their co-stars.
“Fortunately, Hae In had already recorded some of his parts, so I was able to listen to his voice while I was acting,” Kang said. “That helped me immerse myself in the performance.”
As for whether Gon and Gang Ha’s bond should be interpreted as romantic, Kang deliberately left the question open.
“I think the different interpretations are part of what makes the film enjoyable,” he said. “Whatever answer I give doesn’t represent the work itself, and I don’t think there’s any meaning in defining it as just one thing.”
Gill opens in Korean theaters September 9th.
