The family of a Japanese influencer known online as a prominent ENHYPEN fan has spoken out for the first time about the criticism she faced before her death.
In a social media post on August 11th, the family said their daughter had been deeply affected by negative comments directed at her online.
“Our girl was deeply hurt by the critical comments posted on social media,” they wrote. “We hope people will think more carefully about how everything they post — their words, photos and videos — may be received by others.”
The family also shared that they were finally able to bring her home on August 9th, the day that would have been her 26th birthday. She was 25 at the time of her death.
While addressing the criticism she had faced, the family expressed gratitude to those who had supported her, thanking her friends for treating her with kindness, those who encouraged her and those who helped the family through the difficult period. They also thanked people in South Korea who had cared for her.
The influencer had built a following on social media as an ENHYPEN fan. Last month, she drew criticism from some fans after attempting to give flowers to one of the group’s members during an ENHYPEN concert in the United States.
She later publicly apologized for her actions, but continued to face widespread attacks from members of the fandom online.
She died at her home in Seoul on August 5th. Seoul’s Yongsan Police Station confirmed that officers responded to a report and found a Japanese woman dead at the scene. Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding her death.
Following her death, related videos and posts continued to circulate across social media, prompting further discussion over cyberbullying and the continued targeting of the influencer online.
