Hope actor Um Mun Suk became emotional as he opened up about losing his father and the final moments they shared together.
On the May 5th episode of tvN’s variety show You Quiz on the Block, Um Mun Suk appeared as a guest and shared a deeply personal story about his late father.
Um Mun Suk revealed that his father was diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) while he was filming the SBS drama The Fiery Priest. His father was later diagnosed with lung cancer and passed away in 2022.
He shared that his father worked his entire life as a stone quarry worker and believed that years of exposure to dust and stone particles may have affected his health.
“I was by my father’s side when he passed away,” Um Mun Suk said. He explained that his father was in the final stages of cancer and heavily medicated for pain. His father could no longer communicate clearly during that time.
The actor recalled a moment shortly before his father’s death that stayed with him. “I was massaging my father and briefly stepped away to use the restroom. When I came back, he was looking directly at me,” he said. “His eyes were so clear that I thought, ‘My father is getting better.’”
He continued, “I said, ‘Dad, you’re feeling better now, right?’ After that, he took three breaths and passed away.”
Um Mun Suk said he whispered a final message to his father, promising to take care of his mother and younger sister. He recalled, “I came out in tears, overwhelmed by grief, but I saw my mother and sister crying nearby. Seeing them brought my own tears to a stop.”
“I thought, ‘I’m the head of the family now,’” he said. “I told myself, ‘You’re an adult now. Get yourself together. You have to keep the promise you made to your father.’”
The actor added that he believes his father would be proud of his current career. “I’m acting now and receiving so much love, so I feel like my father is watching over me and saying, ‘You’re doing well. I’m proud of you.’”
Um Mun Suk also shared that his father recently appeared in his dream. “Even though I knew it was a dream, I told him, ‘Dad, don’t leave,’” he said through tears. “I think my father would no longer worry about me, and I’ll keep working even harder.”
