Jennie is getting candid about her biggest inspiration, her bond with BLACKPINK and the artists she hopes to work with next.
The 30-year-old singer stars on six covers of Cosmopolitan’s fall Style Issue, hitting newsstands Aug. 10, and also joined the magazine for an episode of its Blind Date video series.
Asked which icon she hopes to emulate, Jennie immediately named Rihanna.
“Rihanna will always be my biggest dream in terms of how much influence she has over pop culture, music culture and art itself,” she said. “She’s so inspiring to me. To find that for myself would be a dream.”
Jennie also reflected on growing up alongside BLACKPINK members Jisoo, Rosé and Lisa.
“I grew up with the girls,” she said. “We were always together through the hard times and the good times. We took care of each other and gave each other advice. I never felt lost.”
After making her acting debut in HBO’s The Idol, Jennie said she is open to taking on more roles.
“I’m bilingual, and acting in my second language teaches you a lot,” she said. “If anyone is looking for that, I’m here.”
She also revealed that costar Lily-Rose Depp was the one offering her guidance on set, not the other way around.
“It was my first acting experience, and she ended up giving me the sweetest advice, just on anything,” Jennie said. “And still up to this day, she’s still making sure that I’m good. I was very grateful to have her by my side.”
On the music front, Jennie said she was thrilled by the response to “Dracula,” her collaboration with Tame Impala’s Kevin Parker.
“It made me unexpectedly super happy,” she said. “I woke up every day to new reactions from fans, and I was just so happy the song did well because it happened so naturally.”
The two recorded the track remotely, with Parker in Australia and Jennie in Korea. “We did it over Zoom and video calls, but it worked out perfectly,” she said.
Jennie also praised Doechii, who joined her on “ExtraL,” as a constant source of inspiration: “II love Doechii. She’s just like a walking inspiration for me. Anything that she does is so creative, and I can already tell that she puts so much time and her vision in it.”
She added, “With ‘ExtraL,’ I was looking for a strong, feminine energy that I could have fun with. Who else better than Doechii?”
Jennie became emotional while discussing a tribute Gracie Abrams wrote about her. “When I saw it, I was literally in tears, and I was actually screaming a little too. It was the sweetest thing anyone could have done,” she said.
Jennie also offered a few playful insights into her dating preferences.
Her biggest first-date red flag? “Ugly shoes.”
As for love at first sight versus friends-to-lovers, she said, “I’m leaning toward friends first. I think it builds something special.”
