Hyeri is clearing the air and having a laugh while she’s at it.
The actress recently revealed that a baby photo she posted on social media, which many assumed was her newborn niece, was actually her friend’s child. “I didn’t write any explanation, so she just became my niece,” she said with a smile. “But that baby isn’t my niece.”
The mix-up quickly spread online after Hyeri shared the photo, but in reality, her niece had only just been born at the time. “My niece was just five days old then, so she didn’t even look like that yet,” she explained. “We went to visit a friend’s baby, and somehow that baby became my niece.”
Even her family found it amusing. “My sister texted me like, ‘That’s not my baby, why are you calling it your niece?’” Hyeri recalled, laughing. “I didn’t even know what to say, so I just let it go.”
Beyond the viral moment, Hyeri is also reflecting on her journey as an actress.
From her breakout role as Deok Sun in Reply 1988 to her more recent turn in Friendly Rivalry, she’s steadily expanded her range — something she says has come from focusing on what feels right in the moment. “I try to choose what’s best for me at that time. If you get too greedy, it doesn’t work out,” she said. “But if I like a project, I really try to go for it.”
Her latest project, Dreaming of You (literal title), recently wrapped filming, and she admits she feels more nervous waiting for audiences to see it than she does while filming. “I’d be happy if people think I’ve matured a bit,” she shared. “I worked hard to show a more detailed, nuanced side.”
Looking back, Hyeri points to key moments that shaped her career — from her viral appearance on Real Men to the lasting impact of Reply 1988. “That drama is like another name for me,” she said. “It made it possible for me to keep acting.”
She also credits Friendly Rivalry, the project she was determined to join, with pushing her further. “I didn’t hesitate. It was just so fun when I read it,” she said. “It helped me trust myself more.”
With another project on the way and a steady stream of fan support — and even a little unexpected attention on her family — Hyeri continues to take it all in stride.
