Netflix has officially confirmed the production of The Rat (working title) and revealed its powerhouse casting of Ryu Jun Yeol and Sul Kyung Gu.
The Rat is a thriller series that follows a reclusive novelist who forms an unlikely alliance with a loan shark chasing him down, only to join forces in tracking a mysterious figure known as “the Rat,” who has stolen his entire existence in a single moment.
The story unfolds as writer Moon Jae (Ryu Jun Yeol) suddenly discovers his phone no longer recognizes his fingerprint and the friend who managed every aspect of his life has vanished. With no way to prove he is who he claims to be, Moon Jae realizes that an enigmatic identity thief—”the Rat”—has taken everything from him: his name, identity, and assets. Desperate to reclaim his existence, he begins hunting down the impostor.
Based on the Kakao Webtoon of the same name and loosely inspired by the eerie Korean folktale “When a rat eats fingernails, it becomes human,” the series promises a psychological deep dive into what happens when the line between reality and impersonation starts to blur.

Ryu Jun Yeol’s Moon Jae is a man paralyzed by social anxiety. After years of living a quiet, monotonous life, he suddenly finds himself cast out of his own life when the mysterious Rat steals everything from him.

Sul Kyung Gu plays No Ja, a relentless loan shark who’ll do just about anything if the price is right. After spending three years hunting down Moon Jae for a debt left unpaid, he finally comes face-to-face with him again. When Moon Jae pleads for help in tracking down the man who stole his life, No Ja agrees—driven by his own need to get his money back.
The Rat brings together genre heavyweights. Director Kim Hong Sun, best known for his signature work on The Guest, Voice, and Netflix’s Money Heist: Korea – Joint Economic Area, will help the series. Screenwriter Lee Jae Gon, who previously delivered taut narratives in Special Affairs Team TEN and A Model Family, is penning the script.
The Rat is shaping up to be another buzzy addition to Netflix’s expanding Korean thriller slate.
