Joo Won, who is making his return to the big screen after nine years with the film The Firefighters, recently spoke about his military service alongside BIGBANG’s Taeyang and G-Dragon, as well as his reaction to the group’s reunion performance at the 2024 MAMA Awards.

During an interview, Joo Won shared that he had invited his military friends, including Taeyang, to the VIP premiere of The Firefighters, but wasn’t sure if they could attend. “I haven’t heard back from them yet,” he said with a laugh.

The conversation turned to the 2024 MAMA Awards, where BIGBANG delivered a powerful reunion performance. Joo Won reminisced, “I really enjoyed watching MAMA. I was Ji Yong’s (G-Dragon) trainer when he first joined the military. Even after completing our service, we still meet every year during mandatory reserve training, and we always have so much to talk about. I told Ji Yong, Taeyang, and Daesung, ‘I’m dying to see you guys perform together again. As a BIGBANG fan, I know it’s not just me.’”

Joo Won revealed that he recently caught up with G-Dragon. “I saw him not too long ago, and he told me, ‘I’m working on something.’ He mentioned needing to stay in shape for the album and looked exhausted,” Joo Won shared. “But less than a month later, he released POWER. Watching the performance, I was amazed—he looked incredible. He is such a professional,” he added, clearly impressed.

Reflecting on BIGBANG’s MAMA performance, Joo Won shared his pride. “Watching them on stage, I felt so proud. The members are all so talented and iconic, but to me, they’re like younger brothers. Seeing them perform made me feel like a proud mom, clapping and smiling the whole time,” he said with a warm laugh.

Meanwhile, Joo Won’s upcoming film, The Firefighters, is based on the 2001 Hongje-dong fire disaster. It portrays the heroic efforts of firefighters who braved harsh conditions with a single mission: extinguish the blaze and save everyone. The film hits theaters on December 4th.
