Actors Go Joon Hee and singer Yong Jun Hyung have recently spoken out about their involvement in the Burning Sun scandal, but public reactions have varied widely. The renewed controversy follows the release of the BBC documentary covering one of K-pop’s biggest scandals, which reignited outrage over the incident.

On June 11th, Go Joon Hee appeared as a guest on the YouTube web show “Don’t Forget Your Breakfast 2,” where she recalled being swept up in the Burning Sun rumors in 2019. The actress did not hold back, addressing the men involved as “son of b*tches,” explaining that her selfie with Seungri, cited as evidence of their connection, was simply taken because he asked her to at an event hosted by a fashion magazine. She also criticized her former agency, YG Entertainment, for their lack of support, which prolonged her efforts to clear her name and made her appear guilty by default.

Go’s candid and emotional account, including her tearful statement, “It’s the hardest thing to clear your name when you’re not guilty,” garnered sympathy and support from many netizens who appreciated her direct approach and vulnerability.

In contrast, Yong Jun Hyung’s attempt to clarify his involvement in the scandal has been met with a chilly reception. Yong, whose name surfaced in connection with Jung Joon Young’s illegal filming controversy in 2019, was known to have received and chatted about the inappropriate content, though he was not part of Jung’s infamous group chat. Initially denying any involvement, he later admitted to viewing the content and left his group, Highlight, acknowledging his improper behavior. At the time, the singer admitted, “I did receive another video and engaged in inappropriate conversations about it.”

On June 12th, Yong Jun Hyung posted a lengthy statement on his personal account, explaining that he had unwittingly opened a video sent to him in a private message without knowing its nature. He admitted he should have condemned the act but failed to do so, expressing his regret and reiterating that he was never part of the group chat involved in the crimes. He stated, “I could have said, ‘Stop it, this is wrong,’ but I wasn’t that kind of person and brushed it off lightly.”

Despite his attempts to clarify, Yong’s admission that he viewed illegal content has only drawn criticism. Many netizens find his emphasis on not being a group chat member unconvincing, as this aspect was already known. Consequently, his explanation has not garnered the empathy he hoped for, and his efforts to distance himself from the scandal have backfired, reinforcing the negative public perception.
