Netflix has responded to the controversy surrounding the mislabeling of the East Sea as the Sea of Japan in some subtitles of The 8 Show. The streaming giant confirmed that it is currently making the necessary corrections.

On the morning of June 4th, a Netflix official told OSEN, “We have identified and are in the process of correcting the mislabeling of ‘East Sea’ as ‘Sea of Japan’ in some subtitles of ‘The 8 Show.’ In providing subtitles in various languages, we did not adequately review the content. We appreciate your continued interest and feedback.”

The issue arose when international subtitles for The 8 Show incorrectly labeled the East Sea as the Sea of Japan. In a scene where actor Ryu Jun Yeol sings the Korean national anthem, which translates to “Until that day when the waters of the East Sea run dry, and Mount Baekdusan is worn away,” the Spanish subtitle mistakenly used the term the Sea of Japan.

Professor Seo Kyoung Duk of Sungshin Women’s University commented, “Many netizens informed me about this issue and immediately sent a protest email to Netflix, given its global influence.” In his email, Seo explained, “The sea between Korea and Japan has been called ‘East Sea’ for over 2,000 years.” He also attached a video explaining the term “East Sea” to prevent misunderstandings among global viewers and urged Netflix to correct the error as soon as possible.

Last year, Seo also demanded corrections when Netflix’s Chinese subtitles referred to “Kimchi” as “Pao Cai.” He emphasized, “A global company must be especially attentive to sensitive issues of individual countries.”

Professor Seo Kyoung Duk has been leading a global campaign to replace the term “Sea of Japan” with “East Sea” wherever it is incorrectly used.

Meanwhile, The 8 Show follows the story of eight individuals trapped in a mysterious 8-story building participating in a tempting but dangerous show where they earn money as time passes. According to Netflix’s TOP 10 website, The 8 Show ranked number one in the global non-English series category with 4,800,000 viewing hours from May 20th to May 26th. The show also made it to the TOP 10 list in 68 countries, including Argentina, Brazil, France, Germany, Egypt, Indonesia, and Vietnam, continuing its high popularity into its second week of release.
