Gong Yoo is currently in talks to join Song Hye Kyo in a new period drama penned by acclaimed writer Noh Hee Kyung.
This marks yet another ambitious project by Noh, who has captivated audiences with deep, emotionally resonant storytelling in series like Worlds Within, Dear My Friends, and Our Blues. Additionally, the forthcoming series, directed by Yoon Jung Lee—known for her work on Coffee Prince and Cheese in the Trap—promises a dynamic collaboration between the star writer and director.
The drama is expected to be a lavish production, with an early budget estimate reaching up to KRW 80 billion ($58 million), aiming to surpass the scale of productions like the Disney Plus original series Moving, which had a budget of over KRW 50 billion ($30 million).
Set to cover the expansive timeline from the post-Korean War era in the early 1950s to the 1980s, the drama will explore the growth of the Korean entertainment industry, starting from the presence of the U.S. Eighth Army. Studio Dragon and Noh’s agency, GTist, are co-producing this 20 to 24-episode series. An official from Studio Dragon highlighted the project’s scope and ambition: “Since we’re still in the planning stages and the script has not been finalized, the scale of the episodes and budget remains tentative.”
With such high-profile talent attached and a significant financial commitment, the series is poised to be a major event in the international streaming market, currently under discussion for distribution on an OTT platform. This project not only marks a reunion for Gong Yoo with director Lee Yoon Jung, who together created magic in Coffee Prince, but also for Song Hye Kyo, who previously collaborated with writer Hee Kyung Noh on Worlds Within. Both actors are expected to deliver compelling performances in what could be a defining series of their careers.
