Lee Ji Ah has candidly spoken about her decision to star in the drama Queen of Divorce, despite the potential sensitivity surrounding her own public divorce from singer Seo Taiji.
In a recent interview with GQ Korea, Lee addressed any hesitation she might have felt given the subject matter. “Why would it be sensitive? I’ve never thought of it that way,” she responded. “Many people marry intending to be happy and end up divorcing. It’s not something extraordinary; it’s part of our everyday lives. Why should I be sensitive about it?”
When asked if her personal experiences could have contributed to her portrayal, Lee acknowledged a deeper understanding. “It’s not just about marriage and divorce, but about relationships, meetings, and partings. I’ve been through pain in human relationships myself. Taking a step back and looking at it makes me think, ‘Yes, I know that feeling.'”
Lee Ji Ah first met Seo Taiji as a teenager at his concert in the United States in 1993. The couple married in 1997 in the US but eventually separated in 2000. Their marriage came to light in 2011 when Lee filed for divorce, seeking alimony and property division. Seo Taiji later married actress Lee Eun Sung in 2013 and welcomed a daughter the following year.
Meanwhile, Lee Ji Ah is set to greet audiences in JTBC’s new Wednesday-Thursday drama Queen of Divorce, premiering on the 31st at 8:50 PM KST. The drama follows Kim Sa Ra (Lee Ji Ah), who transforms into a divorce expert after losing everything overnight due to betrayal by her husband No Yul Sung (Oh Min Suk).
